A dental crown is necessary to repair a damaged tooth and to protect vulnerable teeth that are in a weakened state from breakage.
Situations that call for a crown include having a chipped or broken tooth, a large cavity, following a pulpotomy or root canal therapy, covering up a cosmetically unaesthetic tooth, covering an exposed tooth root, replacing a worn dental filling or completing another dental restoration that is replacing a missing tooth. If you believe you need a dental crown in Hendersonville as part of your restorative dentistry treatment, reach out to Drakes Creek Dental to schedule your consultation!
Metal alloy crowns can last for 20 years or longer with proper care.

A crown is made of durable materials that reinforce the strength of a tooth so that it doesn’t break when you chew. This prevents tooth loss or the need for extraction by covering the tooth on all sides with a protective cap.
It also prevents worsening damage that can cause an infection which would require more invasive restorative treatment. Crowns strengthen and protect your existing teeth when they are damaged or at risk for tooth loss, but they also improve the cosmetic harmony of your smile by covering up chips and cracks, restoring the natural appearance of your teeth, and even covering up discoloration. Dental crowns are long-lasting, low maintenance, and look very natural.

Dr. Truman needs to assess your oral health and the condition of your tooth through an oral exam and digital scans. This helps us determine if a crown is right for you or if you need additional treatment to remove any present tooth decay. If your tooth is too severely damaged, it may need to be removed and replaced.
The first step in preparing your tooth for a crown is to trim and shape it with a dental drill. First, your mouth is numbed with local anesthesia so you don’t feel any pain. Then, a handheld drill is used to file down your tooth on all sides to create more room for a crown to slip over top. Your tooth is shaped for an ideal fit once your dentist attaches the crown.
After filing your tooth, our dentist will take impressions and send them to a dental lab that will create your tailor-made crown. These impressions are used as a mold for your custom crown so that we can match your crown to your natural teeth. While you wait for your official crown to be designed and fabricated, we will bond a temporary crown to your tooth to protect it over the next few weeks.
It takes about 6 weeks for the dental lab to design and produce your dental crown.
Once the dental lab has finished creating your crown, we will have you return to the office so our Hendersonville dentist can remove your temporary crown and bond the official crown to your tooth with dental cement.
Dental crowns play a vital role in enhancing oral function by covering natural teeth that are damaged or weakened, providing structural support and protection. In addition, they hold dental bridges in place to replace missing teeth and serve as an ideal topping for dental implants, ensuring a secure and aesthetically pleasing restoration.
If you have weak or damaged teeth, then you’re an excellent candidate for a crown. A crown will protect your tooth from breaking any further and make sure it lasts for a long time and remains fully functional.
Other good candidates for crowns are patients who are unhappy with the appearance of a certain tooth. If you have one tooth that sticks out from the rest due to discoloration, chips, or it’s awkwardly shaped, then we can cover these cosmetic issues with an aesthetic tooth-colored crown so that no one can see them any longer.
Crowns last for a variable amount of time depending on how you care for them, what type of crown you choose, and where it is located. If you want a long-lasting crown, you should prioritize durable materials like metal, zirconia, or porcelain-fused-to-metal.
These are the best materials to place in the back teeth, which undergo more chewing forces and need stronger crowns to withstand degradation. Ceramic and porcelain crowns have a shorter lifespan of 5 to 15 years but they are much more aesthetically pleasing and can be placed in the front teeth since they are not used for chewing.
To make your crowns last for as long as possible, you should practice good oral hygiene, reduce exposure to stains and wear and tear, and attend regular dental appointments. Sources of wear and tear include teeth grinding, chewing hard, sticky, or crunchy foods, and using your teeth to open packages. Sources of stains include tobacco products, foods, and drinks.
